DTC Medical Fees Fund
People with disabilities should not have to pay money to access social and financial supports.
That’s why we’re launching the DTC Medical Fees Fund, to help people cover any charges by medical practitioners for assistance with the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) application. Please note that this fund is currently only available to residents of BC.
The DTC is important. It helps people with disabilities and their caregivers reduce the taxes they owe. More importantly, you need the DTC to access other financial programs like the Canada Workers Benefit Disability Supplement, Child Disability Benefit, Canada Dental Care Plan, and Registered Disability Savings Plan. Altogether, this can mean hundreds or even thousands of dollars to put towards immediate needs and/or future savings, depending on individual circumstances.
Next July, low-income individuals with the DTC can apply for the Canada Disability Benefit, which can add up to $200/month for those living in poverty.
Why people need support
To get the DTC, people with disabilities need to prove their disability with the help of a medical practitioner. The application is long, which means medical practitioners often charge for their time. DTC medical fees are currently unregulated and can cost people anywhere between $100-$250. For anyone living in poverty, the cost of this help can be prohibitive. Put simply, many people are unable to afford the financial support they need.
Now you can donate and directly support people with disabilities to apply for the DTC, by covering associated fees! Your gift in the $100-$250 range will cover the average cost of an individual’s medical certification fees, and every dollar will go entirely towards these expenses.
Think of this fund as a mutual aid hub, an easy way for you to send money directly to those experiencing financial barriers on their way to accessing greater financial freedom.
