Update: Essential Support Person(s) for People with Disabilities

We are very glad to see that the BC government has responded to concerns about the impact of COVID-19 hospital visitor policies on people with disabilities, and announced a policy revision allowing family members or essential support person(s) to accompany people with disabilities in hospitals and health care settings.

For more information, read the CBC News article. The full policy is also available here.

Essential Supports Survey

What if your loved one with a disability needed to be admitted to hospital today? What if their care worker who is essential for communication and interpretation of their needs was turned away at the hospital doors, leaving your loved one alone and unable to effectively communicate with hospital staff?

People with disabilities are being denied access to essential supports at hospitals. Share your experience with Family Support Institute of BC to help urge the government that an essential support person is a Human Right.

Study: People with disabilities and legal issues

Are you a person with a disability living in western Canada who has had a recent problem, related to:

  • Work?
  • Discrimination, prejudice due to your disability, race, age, 2SLGBTQ+ identity?
  • Healthcare services?
  • Banking?
  • Landlord?
  • Immigration?
  • Family Violence?
  • Government Assistance?

Or any other legal issues? We would like to hear from you!

My name is Doris Rajan and I am doing a study on legal issues experienced by people with disabilities. This research is being carried out to complement the national Canadian Legal Problems Survey (CLPS). The CLPS is a self-completion and it was felt that we likely will miss hearing from populations that face extra barriers to justice, like people with disabilities. This is the reason why we are doing the phone interviews.

We are particularly interested in hearing from Indigenous, racialized, low income, immigrant, 2SLGBTQ+ and Francophone people with disabilities living in western Canada – of all ages and genders.

Please send me an email if you are interested in learning more and/or would like to participate in an anonymous, confidential phone interview. People who qualify will receive a $50 honorarium.

Hope to hear from you soon!
