September 30th: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day
DABC will be closed on Tuesday, September 30th, in recognition of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which, since 2021, has honoured the Indigenous children who never made it home from residential schools as well as the Survivors of those “schools.” On this day, people are encouraged to learn about and reflect on the dark history of residential schools and their lasting impacts, but also to celebrate Indigenous cultures and teachings. It has been a statutory holiday in BC since 2023.
This date was purposely chosen to align with Orange Shirt Day, which references Phyllis (Jack) Webstad’s story—her favourite orange shirt was taken from her when she arrived at a residential school in Williams Lake. Learn more here.
There are numerous events happening throughout BC to mark the day.
