Program Description
The Disability Law Clinic (DLC) provides free, confidential legal services to people with disabilities across BC. We provide summary advice services on certain disability-related areas of law. A very important part of our service is information and referral services for people with disabilities seeking help about areas of law we cannot assist with.
Job Description
DLC is seeking a part-time Legal Assistant to join our team. The primary focus of this position will be to provide legal assistant support to the clinic’s lawyers, as well as supporting our intake, information and referral team.
Responsibilities:
- Supporting clinic lawyers with litigation files and general administrative support to the clinic.
- Intake of new clients, including providing information and referral services where appropriate
- Support for summary advice appointments, including communicating with clients about information and documents needed for upcoming appointments, and setting appointments in lawyer calendars
The successful applicant must:
- Have lived experience with a disability and/or experience supporting people with disabilities
- Have demonstrated alignment with DABC’s vision, mission and values, including DABC’s values of accountability, mutual support, reconciliation, accessibility and intersectionality: https://disabilityalliancebc.org/about-dabc/what-we-do/
- Be technologically proficient with computers and computer programs, including Microsoft Office software specifically Excel, Word and Outlook. Experience with Clio or other legal services or data file management software would be a strong asset
- Ability to work effectively with clients, members and staff across many diverse backgrounds
The following are strong assets for this position:
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts in plain language
- Experience working in a legal office, especially a non-profit legal clinic
- Training or experience as a legal assistant and/or familiarity with BC courts and legal research resources
- Experience carrying out administrative tasks
- Experience in the non-profit sector
- Skills and experience in de-escalation and conflict management
- Knowledge of and experience with anti-oppressive practices
- Familiarity with legal services available to low-income people in BC
Wages and Benefits
Salary:
This position is for 32 hours, 4 days, per week at $41,600 annually. Alternatively, this position is also open to candidates wishing to only work 24 hours, 3 days, per week at $31,200 annually. This position offers the following benefits after a three-month probationary period:
- 12 days of paid vacation annually (based on 32 hours per week)
- 14 days of paid sick leave annually (based on 32 hours per week)
- 100% of the cost of extended health and dental care benefit premiums
- 2 weeks of paid time off during DABC’s annual holiday office closure in December
- Employee wellness benefit
Working hours and location:
This position is a hybrid position at four days a week, 8 hours per day (with a one-hour paid lunch break). The successful candidate may be required to work at the Downtown Vancouver office two days a week, and at home the rest of the time.
The position is located in Vancouver, on the Unceded Territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, and Squamish Nations.
