Launched in 2017, the Right Fit program (RFP) is a multi-partner service designed to address the shortage of wheelchair accessible housing in British Columbia. The program matches affordable, accessible homes and independent living supports with people who need them.

Program Description

The Right Fit Program is led by Disability Alliance BC in partnership with the Individualized Funding Resource Centre Society (IFRC) in Metro Vancouver and the Victoria Disability Resource Centre (VDRC) in the Capital Regional District. The program provides peer-led navigation support to wheelchair users and their families, which includes holistic assessments, coordination of disability-related supports (such as home support, equipment, and assistive technology). The Right Fit maintains a comprehensive inventory of accessible units through a standardized Accessibility Checklist. The program also assists housing providers by matching vacant units with wheelchair users who have diverse accessibility needs and are the “right fit” tenants, ensuring the most effective use of accessible housing stock.

Job Description

Disability Alliance BC (DABC) is seeking a Housing Navigator for the Right Fit Program in the Capital Regional District. Working under the direction of DABC’s RFP Program Manager, the Navigator works with clients who are wheelchair users in need of affordable, accessible homes in the Capital Regional District. Additionally, the navigator conducts outreach to housing providers in the region, maintains an inventory of accessible rental units and completes detailed Accessibility Checklists describing accessibility features to match clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist eligible participants with finding and applying for accessible housing that meets their needs from start to finish.
  • Conduct client intakes and holistic assessment of all disability support needs, including home supports, equipment and assistive technology.
  • Conduct outreach with housing providers to promote the Right Fit Program and identify accessible housing units in the Capital Regional District.
  • Coordinate with housing providers and building managers to arrange access to units to complete the Accessibility Checklist; undertake site visits to measure and record accessibility features and take photographs.
  • Maintain an inventory of housing providers and accessible units.
  • Match clients to housing units.
  • Facilitate the transition process once a suitable home is found and fast track processes to obtain independent living supports.
  • Collaborate with government agencies, service providers and client’s support networks
  • Conduct outreach and participate in public presentations at workshops, conferences, and other events (virtual or in-person) to promote the Right Fit Program in the Capital Regional District
  • Prepare monthly reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The successful applicant must:

  • Have post-secondary education in a relevant field such as social work, occupational therapy, community development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience providing client-centered support, case management, or peer navigation services.
  • Experience advocating for clients and coordinating services with government agencies, housing providers, and community organizations.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with accessible housing, accessibility standards, building design, technology and architecture.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and maintain supportive relationships with clients across diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to act ethically and handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Experience conducting outreach, community engagement, and public presentations.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and administrative skills, including the ability to manage multiple client files and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers and computer programs, including Microsoft Office software, specifically Excel, Word, Outlook, and client database systems.
  • A Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and ability to travel within the Capital Regional District.

Salary: $54,000, annually, based on 8 hours per workday at 5 days per week. DABC is also open for candidates to apply for this position on a part time basis (minimum 24 hours per week, salary to be prorated accordingly).

Working hours and location

This position can be either full-time at 40 hours per week or part-time, (between 24 and 32 hours) at 8 hours a day (including 1 hour as a paid lunch break) and is a hybrid work opportunity; the successful candidate will be required to work in the Victoria office two or three days a week, and at home the rest of the time. The position may also require occasional travel to other BC communities and beyond.

The Disability Law Clinic (DLC) provides free, confidential legal services to people with disabilities across BC. We provide summary advice and representation on certain disability-related areas of law, including:

  • Human rights and discrimination, including disability-related complaints to the BC Human Rights Tribunal (BCHRT) and federal human rights agencies
  • Disputes about income support for people with disabilities, especially disability assistance from BC’s Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. The DLC works with DABC’s Advocacy Access program on appeals of Ministry decisions. The DLC also represents clients in applications for judicial review of certain administrative decisions
  • Questions or disputes related to decision-making rights, especially in cases where BC’s Public Guardian and Trustee or a court-appointed committee make decisions on behalf of a person
  • Questions about private long-term disability insurance benefits.

The DLC currently consists of three lawyers, a full-time legal advocate, a part-time intake worker and a part-time legal assistant. We are seeking a new articling student for 1 year, ideally starting in May 2026.

Job Description

Duties of the articling student position include:

  • representing clients in disability-related human rights complaints to the BC Human Rights Tribunal (BCHRT) and federal human rights agencies
  • representing clients in appeals to BC’s Employment and Assistance Appeal Tribunal (EAAT), in cases involving disputes about provincial government disability benefits
  • providing research support and helping the DLC’s staff lawyers to prepare applications for judicial review applications
  • providing summary advice to clients on a variety of legal issues
  • preparing research and briefing notes to support DABC’s ongoing systemic policy advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities
  • delivering public legal education sessions, workshops, and materials for people with disabilities and disability-related organizations.
  • Reviewing DABC’s helpsheets and other publications about government disability benefits, to ensure they are accurate and up to date, and developing new helpsheets in cooperation with DABC staff
  • Assisting with the intake process, including: responding to inquiries from the public, going through the intake process with prospective clients, triaging requests for assistance, and ascertaining what information is needed in order to determine if a potential claim has merit
  • Attending DABC staff meetings and community events.

The successful applicant must:

  • Have completed and graduated from law school before May 2026, and be eligible to article as per the requirements of the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • Have experience providing services to people with disabilities and/or advocating for disability justice and/or have lived experience with a disability

Wages and Benefits

Salary: $65,000

DABC pays the student’s salary for the 12-month Law Society Admission Program as well as the cost of the mandatory Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC). This position offers the following benefits after a three-month probationary period:

Program Description

Access DTC Program

The Access DTC program works through several partnerships and initiatives to provide direct support through the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and related benefits including the Child Disability Benefit, Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) and Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). Our aim is to promote financial literacy and financial security for people with disabilities in British Columbia. Access to the DTC and related benefits has become more relevant, as many people with disabilities will need the DTC to apply for federal programs like the Canada Disability Benefit.

Tax AID

Tax AID is a DABC program that partners with the Together Against Poverty Society, the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society, and the Active Support Against Poverty Society, to provide free support to people with disabilities across BC to file income taxes for current and previous years. In addition to simple tax filing, we help with self-employment income, outstanding amounts owed to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), applying for other tax related government programs/benefits, and matters related to financial literacy.

Job Description

DABC is seeking a Program Assistant for our Tax AID and Access DTC programs. This role contributes to maintaining the quality and sustainability of program services. The Program Assistant will assist managers of both the Tax AID and Access DTC teams in supporting the day-to-day operations of both programs by supporting client intake and inquiries, maintaining program policies and procedures, developing program materials, coordinating outreach activities, and other tasks as reasonably required.

Responsibilities:

  • Working alongside the Tax AID and Access DTC Program Managers,
  • Respond to client inquiries over the phone, email, and in-person
  • Screen clients for eligibility of Access DTC and Tax AID services and conduct initial client intake
  • Ensure regular update of any program materials, including program manuals, educational resources, community resources and contacts list
  • Maintain and organize physical and digital files, as well as other program materials in the office
  • Provide accurate statistical information on participant activities for evaluations and reporting purposes
  • Provide information and support to people with disabilities on the DTC, RDSP, CDB, and other tax related issues
  • Keep up to date on any changes to policy and procedures relevant to the Access DTC and Tax AID programs
  • Liaise with community partners to schedule and arrange specific outreach activities
  • Assist in the development of marketing and communications strategies
  • Support the Tax AID and Access DTC advocates with daily tasks

The successful applicant must: 

  • Have a minimum 2 years combined post-secondary education and/or applicable work experience
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts in plain language
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with clients and staff across many diverse backgrounds
  • Be self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work effectively with a team as well as independently
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, and empathetic demeanor with clients and have the ability to manage client expectations as it relates to the capacity and scope of DABC’s services
