BSH Blog Post: "Right Fit, Wrong Priority: Federal Funding Pulled from Accessible Housing"

“The right to housing is not realized through supply alone. It is realized when housing is matched to the people who need it. Programs like The Right Fit need to be understood as essential infrastructure, not optional extras. We already know what works. Now we must act to preserve it.”

The above quote is pulled from a blog post on the Balanced Supply of Housing website about the importance of the Right Fit Program: https://bsh.ubc.ca/federal-funding-pulled-from-accessible-housing/. It was written by Drs. Alina McKay and Colin Philips, researchers from UBC. Dr. Phillips was placed into accessible housing by the Program and as such, has firsthand experience of its impact.

Along with our Right Fit partners Individualized Funding Resource Centre Society we are still fighting to save the Right Fit, after losing federal funding. Without the Program, hundreds of wheelchair users will lose access to critical housing support.

Media coverage and video: press conference to save the Right Fit Program

A group of people attend the press conference to save the Right Fit Program

On April 2nd, 2026, DABC and our Right Fit Program partner Individualized Funding Resource Centre (IFRC) held a press conference at the Harmony Building in Vancouver to highlight the immensely negative impact of the closure of the Right Fit. The program’s closure due to the loss of federal funding leaves hundreds of wheelchair users without critical housing support.

We would like to thank the media for attending and shining a light on this issue, as well as IFRC, MP Jenny Kwan, members of the community and Right Fit clients, for attending and speaking to the importance of the program in an urgent effort to save it.
